Taxonomy Informal group. Pisces (= Fishes or more precisely Finfishes) is a paraphyletic group. Although variable with time, Pisces contains the resurrected Agnatha, lampreys and hagfishes as extant groups (under the resurrected Cyclostomi, not used here, but may be in the future when more fossils will be added), Chondrichthyes and Osteichthyes minus Tetrapoda.
Pisces
= Vertebrata - Tetrapoda
= Agnatha + (Gnathostomata - Tetrapoda)
= Agnatha + Chondrichtyes + (Osteichthyes - Tetrapoda)
= Agnatha + Chondrichtyes + Actinopterygii + (Sarcopterygii - Tetrapoda) .
Traditionally, Pisces were ranked as a superclass. In the current classification, they could be better ranked between Gnathostoma and its parvphylum children.
Recent checklists and ichthyofaunas are titled "fishes and lampreys of ...", which seems redundant and unnecessary since even without lampreys, fishes remain paraphyletic! [details]
