Etymology Not stated. The obvious derivation is as a reference to the spherical papillae on the dorsum. However, Örsted used the unique (to him) spelling of 'dorum' instead of 'dorsum', a neuter Latin noun referring to the back. Possibly this was a lapsus. He used a neuter adjective for the species-group name 'flavum', thus Sphaerodorum, and all the genus names in the family that are variants of it, is/are neuter. [details]
Grammatical gender Sphaerodorum is neuter [details]
Nomenclature Ephesia gracilis is senior subjective synonym to Sphaerodorum flavum as its publication date is earlier by a few months (Fauchald, 1974: 257), but S. flavum (= S. gracilis) remains type species of Sphaerodorum. In contrast Wolff & Petersen (1991: 670) state that Örsted (1843) was published before Rathke (1843). No supporting evidence is provided by Wolff & Petersen, but Fauchald gives no reasoning either. The matter is unresolved. Note that in another genera pair the opposite priority has been accepted. Ophelina 0rsted 1843 is treated as valid over Ammotrypane Rathke 1843 since 1892 [details]
Spelling Nomenclator Zoologicus listings oddly cross-reference to a lapsus spelling 'spaerodorum' in a contents list on p.35 of Örsted (1843) as if this was the correct original spelling. However, Örsted used Sphaerodorum when he introduced the descriptions of both the genus on p.42, and the species on p.43. [details]Unreviewed
