Classification Raspailiidae has had a chequered history. The family was variously considered related to microcionid and axinellid groups. The latest verdict is that Raspailiidae, Axinellidae and Stelligeridae together form a monophyletic group (order Axinellida) based on 18S and 28S gene sequences. Not all genera assigned to Raspailiidae in the Systema Porifera (and maintained here) are expected to belong to this reassigned group, but additional research is necessary to establish this. Until it has been made clear, we will maintain the content of Raspailiidae as presented in the Systema Porifera (Hooper, 2002) [details]
