Taxonomy Reniera as a name for sponges has a checquered history. Originally, Reniera was erected by Nardo, 1847 for Reniera typica, R. flava and R. forcellata, all of which were insufficiently described and declared nomina nuda, making Nardo's genus also a nomen nudum. Schmidt (1862) recognizably defined Reniera and recognizably described several species, including the species subsequently indicated as type, viz. R. aquaeductus. Authorship of Reniera thus becomes Schmidt, 1862. An earlier genus, Rayneria Nardo, 1833, likewise a nomen nudum, was associated with Reniera by some authors, but this remains unproven. [details]

[details]
