Taxonomy Axinellida were erected for sponges with axially strengthened skeletons and oviparous reproduction. These features are no longer considered markers for a monophyletic assemblage in the Systema Porifera. Families assigned to this order were distributed among three previously recognized orders, Halichondrida, Hadromerida and Poecilosclerida. However, recent molecular studies confirmed the existence of a monophyletic group largely similar in content to Lévi's original concept, including the type species of family Axinellidae. Thus, the order is reinstated. [details]
