Nomenclature Nipponnemertes was originally introduced by Friedrich (1968: 34) for seven nominal species of Amphiporus without type designation. Gibson & Crandall (1989: 463) made it nomenclaturally available by diagnosing the taxon and fixing Amphiporus drepanophoroides Griffin, 1898 as type species. Under Articles 13.1, 13.3, 50.1, and 68.2 of the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature (4th ed.), the author(s) of Nipponnemertes should be ascribed as “Gibson & Crandall, 1989”. Confusingly, Gibson (1995: 442) later indicated Nipponnemertes pulchra as the type species, but this is invalid. Likewise, Crandall (2001: 106) noted “I believe that N. punctatulus is the best candidate and it is here named the type species of the genus Nipponnemertes by subsequent designation in accordance with Articles 69.1 and 69.1.1 of the Code”, but this is also invalid.
