Etymology Not stated. Amythas membranifera is evidently named with a compound name 'membranifera' referring to a folded 'tentacular' membrane in the oral cavity, with -fera the feminine form of -fer, -a, -um, meaning to carry. [details] Type locality Commonwealth Bay, RV Aurora summer cruise 1913-14, station 10, -65.3333, 96.2167, 594 m (325 fathoms), Antarctic Ocean [details] Type specimen Benham (1921) did not designate types. Neither Schiaparelli & Jirkov (2021) nor Carrerette et al (2023) comment on the whereabouts of the holotype (and only specimen examined by Benham) of Amythas membranifera. These later authors describe material collected from distant locations to the type locality of Commonwealth Bay. However, the holotype of Amythas membranifera is at the Australian Museum as registration W.728. https://biocache.ala.org.au/occurrences/221d2b96-d852-4a7f-aa17-6551dd506226 record id: 221d2b96-d852-4a7f-aa17-6551dd506226 [details]
