Type material  Wagler (1926) described this species from a series of 143 specimens, 93 females (45 ovig.) and 50 males (16 mature), collected by the Valdivia, during the Deutschen Tiefsee-Expedition 1898–1899, mostly from the Southern Ocean. However, three stations, stn. 36, from the north-east Atlantic [20°54’N 19°52’W] and stns. 228 & 230, from the Indian Ocean, near the Seychelles [02°38’S 65°59’E & 02°43’S 61°12’E], are well outside the Southern Ocean limits, and their identification is considered suspect, especially since they are the only records of this species from beyond the Antarctic Polar Front. Unfortunately, the type series seems to be lost, and so, the identity of these specimens cannot be verified. A holotype was not designated. Thus, disregarding the above non-Antarctic records, syntypes were collected from Antarctic waters, due south of South Africa, from the Atlantic Sector, stn. 132 [55°27’S 28°58’E], 2000–0 m, 29 November 1898; stn. 136 [55°57’S 16°14’E], 2000–0 m, 3 December 1898 & stn. 139 [55°01’S 21°34’E], 1500–0 m, 5 December 1898; and from the Indian Ocean Sector stn. 142 [55°27’S 28°58’E], 1000–0 m, 7 December 1898; stn. 145 [59°10’S 40°13’E], 1500–0 m, 10 December 1898 & stn. 149 [62°26’S 53°21’E], 1500–0 m, 15 December 1898. Wagler (1926) does not indicate which specimen is illustrated. [details]
