Segmental podocytes are reported for the first time to occur of different harpacticoid copepod species. In yet another species, segmental podocytes lie in
the pleural folds, but also in closest vicinity to the pereiopods. The ultrastructure of these cells
resembles not only that of other Crustacea (Isopoda, Cephalocarida, Decapoda), but also that
of podocytes of the crustacean maxillary gland, as well as that of the nephrocytes of the Insecta.
These results, together with the confirmation that the segmentally arranged so-called "nephro-
cytes" in the Bathynellacea (Syncarida) are in fact podocytes, support the view of a crustacean
ancestor with segmental nephridial organs
