Etymology The name of the genus Micronereis is composed by the name of the genus Nereis Linnaeus, 1758, the type of the family Nereididae, preceded by the prefix of Greek origin micro-, meaning 'small', and presumably refers to the small size of the type species, Micronereis variegata Claparède, 1863 ("Ich war nicht wenig überrascht, als ich an dieser nur 4 Mm. langen und aus nur 21 Segmenten bestehenden Zwerg-nereide alle Kennzeichen des reifen Zustandes bemerkte" (Claparède, 1863: 57).
