Classification The systematics of Tellinidae lacks a recent revision based on a phylogenetic hypothesis, and is currently in a state of confusion. Different approaches are taken according to authors, one of them being to list most of the species of Tellininae under the Linnean genus Tellina s.l. (e.g. Coan & Valentich-Scott, 2012), eventually distributed in subgenera, the opposite being to distribute the species among several genera (e.g. Nordsieck, 1969; Okutani, 2000; Mikkelsen & Bieler, 2008). The generic placements are usually not supported by phylogenetic reconstruction and are sometimes erroneous (e.g. placement of many European species in Angulus Megerle von Mühlfeldt, 1811).
Awaiting a definitive phylogenetic hypothesis of the subfamily Tellininae, the classification presented herein follows, unless otherwise stated, that of the Treasise on Invertebrate Paleontology (Cox et al., 1969). Most species are represented under Tellina s.l., as alternate representation to the combination with the different subgenera. Based on some leading sources (e.g. Okutani, 2000; Mikkelsen & Bieler, 2008, and recently published papers), we also list as alternate representation the combinations in which the subgenera of the Treatise are treated as full genus. Taxonomy A comprehensive treatment of the Recent members of family Tellinidae was provided by Huber, Langleit & Kreipl (2015), rejecting the long-standing subfamilies Tellininae and Macominae as defined by Keen in Moore (1969), and recognizing nine subfamilies. In this view, which has been followed in WoRMS and MolluscaBase, Tellina is restricted to very few species of the Caribbean area, and all the subgenera of Tellina are given full genus status. Other contemporary authors e.g. Coan & Valentich-Scott (2012) have a more conservative view including many subgnera in Tellina s.l. The palaeontological literature has not, so far (2019), endorsed the view Huber et al. and continued using Tellina in a broad sense. Therefore there may be a mismatch in generic concepts from different sources, but. WoRMS and MollscaBase will only record generic assignments formally proposed in published sources and not make new taxonomic decisions for the sake of consistency. [details]Unreviewed
