Moore (1973, pp. 350-351): "A variant of C. vanhoeffeni was described by Zelinka (1913) as C. vanhoeffeni var. kerguelensis. Johnston (1938) considered this to be a separate species C. kerguelensis. Higgins (1967) noted the close resemblance to C. rnacquariae of C. vanhoeffeni and especially C. vanhoeffeni var. kerguelensis. However, C. vanhoeffeni var. kerguelensis as judged from Zelinka (1913, Tafel, XXXIX fig. 11) shows no irregularities in the basal cavity of the lateroterminal spines and is thus undoubtedly closer to C. vanhoeffeni than C. macquariae. Its status relative to C. vanhoeffeni cannot of course be finalized here but in view of the slight nature of its divergence and in the light of the variability found within the North Sea collection of C. rnacquariae with respect to the shape of the terminal process, the present author is satisfied with its present variant assignation."
